Each senior secondary subject in the VCE curriculum has its own specifications for assessments – which are both internal and external. There is not one single ‘VCE exam’ but a range of assessments in each unit of a course.

Failing an exam does not automatically mean failing the entire course, as the final result is based on the overall assessment across multiple assessments, including school-assessed coursework. Although, assessment scores contribute to the calculation of the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), which is used for university entrance purposes. Failing an exam can potentially lower the study score and impact the overall ATAR, particularly if the exam carries significant weight in the subject’s assessment.

If a student fails one of their exams or assessments, the specific consequences and options available to them can vary. In some cases, students who fail an exam may be offered the opportunity to sit for a supplementary exam or a repeat exam. If a student fails a VCE subject overall, they may have the option to retake the subject in a subsequent study period or year. This allows them to complete the subject requirements and improve their final result.

It’s essential to remember that failing an exam or subject does not define a student’s abilities or potential for success. VCE offers multiple assessment opportunities, and students have the chance to improve their results through ongoing coursework, other exams, and the overall assessment process. Support and guidance from teachers, counsellors, tutors, and parents can play a vital role in assisting students in navigating challenges, getting support to succeed, and exploring alternative pathways to achieve their educational goals.

ATAR stands for Australian Tertiary Admission Rank. It is a ranking system used in Australia for university admission purposes. The ATAR is calculated based on a student’s performance in their senior secondary studies, usually completed in the final two years of high school.

Different states and territories have their own secondary school qualifications, but the underlying purpose of the ATAR remains consistent—to rank and compare students for university entry.

How is it calculated?

The ATAR is calculated by the relevant state or territory’s tertiary admissions’ authority. The calculation involves several steps, including scaling of students’ study scores in their completed senior secondary subjects. Different states and territories have varying requirements for the number of subjects or units to include in the ATAR score calculation. Typically, scores are calculated from a student’s highest 5 qualifying subjects (10 units) and the score needs to include their English results.

What is an ‘ATAR Score’?

The ATAR is reported on a scale from 0 to 99.95, with 99.95 being the highest possible ATAR. It represents a percentile rank, indicating the percentage of students whose scores are equal to or lower than a particular ATAR. For example, an ATAR of 80 means the student performed better than approximately 80% of the cohort.

VCE stands for the Victorian Certificate of Education. It is the educational program offered in the state of Victoria, Australia, and is awarded to students upon successful completion of their senior secondary education.

VCE is specific to the state of Victoria and is administered by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA). It aligns with the Victorian curriculum and assessment guidelines, which may differ from the curricula and assessment frameworks used in other Australian states and territories.

It’s important to note that while VCE is specific to Victoria, other Australian states and territories have their own senior secondary education programs. For example, the New South Wales Higher School Certificate (HSC), the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), and the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) are widely recognised programs in their respective regions.

Also, along with the VCE, many high school students in Victoria also work to complete their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). The ATAR is a rank used for university entrance purposes and is calculated based on students’ performance in their VCE subjects.

We have VCE Tutors that are equipped with the curriculum and can help your child gain their Victorian Certificate of Education and get them ready for the world outside high school!

This certificate is awarded to students who have completed a sufficient amount of learning during their high school years, typically at the end of Year 12. The certificate is issued by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority.

Obtaining a QCE

In order to obtain a QCE, a student must complete a set amount of learning worth a minimum of 20 credits. The students need to complete the set amount of learning, at the set standard, in a set pattern, while meeting literacy and numeracy requirements which you can see here. These credit can be obtained from a combination of subjects, TAFE courses, or other recognised studies.

Because students are required to obtain 12 QCE credits from a core course of study, it is essential that students have at least three subjects that remain unchanged through the course of Year 11 & 12.

It is important to note that the QCE is different from having an ATAR score. Having a QCE can help high school graduates improve their job prospects, but a student also needs an ATAR in order to gain tertiary entrance.

Obtaining a QCE as an Adult

You can complete your senior education and gain a QCE in a variety of different ways including through:

TAFE
