🌟 Erin Bell, APT of the Month: Meet the Mentor Changing Lives Beyond the Classroom

At A Team Tuition, we believe in celebrating the extraordinary work of our educators—not just for improving grades, but for the deep, lasting impact they make in students’ lives. This month, we’re thrilled to spotlight our APT of the Month, whose dedication to nurturing, mentoring, and inspiring students is nothing short of exceptional.

“Being named APT of the Month is an incredible honour,” they shared. “It reminds me how grateful I am to work for a company that values and supports its educators. This isn’t just recognition of my effort—it’s a celebration of the passion I pour into helping students grow.”

And grow they do. With a deep commitment to developing not just academic skills but confidence, motivation, and emotional resilience, Erin brings tutoring to life in a way that’s both impactful and personal.

💡 Beyond a Tutor—A True Mentor

For this standout tutor, mentoring is woven into every session. “I wasn’t always a strong student myself,” Erin explained. “But two incredible teachers changed my life. One nurtured my creativity; the other taught me how I learn best. Because of them, I strive to be that mentor for others.”

Many of their students face more than academic challenges—they deal with anxiety, low self-esteem, and the feeling that they don’t fit within the education system. With empathy and insight drawn from their own experiences as a neurodivergent learner, this APT meets students where they are and reminds them: “You’re not dumb—you’re brilliant. You just need the right tools.”

🎯 Creative Strategies That Stick

What truly sets this educator apart is their out-of-the-box approach to keeping students engaged and improving behaviour.

Take the “three lives” system, for instance—developed with a student who frequently interrupted sessions to ask how much time was left. Each time they asked, they’d lose a life. Three lives gone? A pre-agreed consequence like a break from iPad time would follow. “It helped them learn to self-regulate,” they explained, “and gave them ownership over their behaviour.”

There’s also the ever-popular “lucky dip” bag filled with incentives like “be the teacher for 5 minutes” or “extra drawing time”—small rewards that create big shifts in motivation.

These tailored strategies have helped countless students not only re-engage with their learning but take pride in their progress.

💬 One Student, One Transformation

One story stands out. “I’ve worked with a Year 6 student since mid-Year 5. She came to me with severe anxiety and low confidence after years of bullying, and a reading level far below standard. Before anything academic, we focused on building trust.”

Bit by bit, her confidence grew. She tackled new reading goals, found books she loved, and started checking books out from the library on her own. “Now, she’s not only reading fluently—she’s leading her own learning journey,” they said. “It’s transformations like these that remind me why I do what I do.”

👏 Living the INSPIRE Values

Of all A Team Tuition’s INSPIRE values, Nurture resonates most strongly. “When students feel safe and supported, they’re more open to learning. I don’t just work with students—I work with their families. Together, we create a shared path to progress.”

Session feedback is sent to parents consistently, and collaboration with their Personal Student Mentor (PSM) ensures no student’s journey is left to chance.

🧠 From Student to Scholar

This educator doesn’t just preach a love of learning—they live it. Having achieved significant personal academic success, their own journey helps them connect deeply with their students. “I make it a point to celebrate small wins with my students. Recognition builds confidence, and confidence fuels achievement.”

💬 Words of Wisdom

So, what advice would they give to other Academic Personal Trainers?

“Be yourself. Connection comes before content. Your students don’t need a perfect tutor—they need someone who gets them. The more you love what you do, the more your students will love learning with you.”

And what’s the passion that drives it all?

“Helping students fall in love with learning. Whether it’s a high score on Mathletics or a sticker from school, those moments—where pride shines through their smile—that’s what it’s all about.”

🎉 Congratulations to our APT of the Month! Your dedication, creativity, and heart make an extraordinary impact—and we’re so lucky to have you on the team.

Meet Cecilia, who prefers to go by CC. CC’s start to school was a difficult one after going through a serious illness in her first years of primary school. She missed a lot of school time while in and out of hospital. While CC missed those fundamental years of primary school, where her cohort learned core reading, writing, and numeracy skills, CC’s school challenges weren’t simply about missed time. Our approach to both high school and primary school tutoring is to look beyond the ‘surface problems’ and get to the core of the struggles a child is facing. When a child, no matter how old, falls behind in school, their loss of confidence can be more of a barrier than simply missed lessons.

“Cecilia is bright, but it wasn’t reflected in her marks. It was affecting her confidence and how she felt about herself. This was my biggest concern” says mum Lizzy.

Cecilia Meets Primary School English Tutor Michaela

Now in grade five, and tackling the burgeoning workload of upper primary school, CC’s lack of confidence began to have a serious impact on her grades – and her self esteem. Mum Lizzy called in Academic Personal Trainer, Michaela to help CC get through her homework, assignments, and exams. Michaela could tell that CC lacked the confidence she needed to fully embrace study. She had the “I can’t” attitude and that, more than anything was holding her back. CC is a bright girl. She’s creative, and funny and a passionate young artist. In the classroom, however, she was reticent and uneasy.

Michaela began by working on CC’s confidence, helping her to adjust the way she thought about her school work and how she related to the curriculum. Michaela introduced “learning through play” to reinforce the reading and writing fundamentals that started CC’s journey towards poor academic achievement. Where most tutors would push CC to rote learn spelling and grammar, Michaela helped CC to develop an interest in words and language, and the learning simply followed. Primary school English tutoring is about helping a child discover their own talents – if you force lessons upon them they’ll end up disliking the subject more. We believe in educating a child to follow their curiousity, to embrace their ideas and to pursue the curriculum via their own passions and interests.

“Michaela has been amazing for Cecilia. She has gone to so much trouble to find out what is important to CC and how to connect with her. Cecilia has really opened up to Michaela and I can see that in her confidence. She really looks forward to her weekly tutoring sessions”, says mum Lizzy.

Learn more about our primary school English tutors.

CC’s Achievements are More Than Just Grades

“At my last parent-teacher meeting, Cecilia’s teacher said that her confidence and participation had notably improved. She said some other teachers had also noticed” says Lizzy. During her time at primary school, CC has never achieved above a D grade in English. She’s always struggled with English especially and it’s been an uphill battle for mum and dad – not just to get her to fully engage at school but also to balance encouraging CC to keep trying while watching her performance destroy her confidence.

In the two semesters, CC has worked with Michaela, she’s gone from a D to a C and now, a C to a B. She’s on course to becoming an A student in a subject she’d never once passed just six months ago.

Click here to find a tutor for your child

While mum and dad are very proud of CC’s grades, for them, primary school English tutoring was never about what comes home on a report card, it’s 100% about how Cecilia now sees herself, and her self-worth. And that’s the most powerful result any parent could ask for.

“Cecelia has never passed English before, so we’re really celebrating. But more than that, her teacher, teacher’s aide, reading group leader – they’ve all said she’s far more confident, she’s putting her opinion out there, and she’s finally feeling confident to read out loud. This has been a big celebration in our house.”

One Term of English Tutoring and Ellie Went from a Low C to a High B

We are so happy we chose A Team Tuition. In one term Ellie’s English grade went from a low C to a high B and we are confident that this is just the beginning. Her grades in Science and Religion also improved in the same term – especially impressive was clawing her way back to a C+ after a fail disaster in Science where Ellie simply could not adequately paraphrase and express the relevant information in her reports.

Ellie is not neurotypical. She was diagnosed in Year 7 as having ADHD and Asperger’s (or ASD Level 1). For our family, this diagnosis put a name to the behaviours like Ellie’s propensity to become obsessive or fixated about topics or activities that interest her, the complete inability to focus or “cope” in certain situations and Ellie’s frequent compulsion for repetitive movement when concentrating. Ellie likes her own company and is a prolific reader – if you are looking for Ellie, you will inevitably find her squirrelled away with a book, Kindle or (her recent obsession) reading Harry Potter fan fiction online.

Ellie is in Year 10 and, despite being an avid reader, has always struggled with English. Specifically, the ability to put the ideas in her head on paper in a coherent and orderly way and use her extensive vocabulary to its best advantage. Over the years, Ellie’s poor performance in English had been dismissed by various teachers with comments like “It’s only primary school, she will get there” or “I’m sure she will pick it up by the end of this year.” By the end of Year 9, it never “picked up” and it became very evident that we had left our run late – this problem was impacting her grades across the board. Time to engage a tutor. Not just any tutor though, someone who could reach Ellie on her level.

How did A Team Tuition help Ellie?

A Team Tuition matched Ellie up with Sebastian Vowels. Sebastian has Bachelor of Psychology and is currently studying a Diploma in Software Development to complement his passion for programming – with a view to developing software that helps people. He is also into reading and watching movies – a huge bonus with Ellie. With Sebastian’s background in psychology, I felt that A Team Tuition picked an ideal fit for Ellie and her complex learning needs.

From the times I’ve been loitering in the background doing my own thing, I have noticed these things:

Tutoring isn’t about doing Ellie’s assignments for her – Sebastian encourages Ellie to run with her own ideas while still training her on the elements she struggles with like structure, depth, and revising and refining her own work;

Sebastian is able to engage Ellie in exploring English fundamentals by connecting over her Harry Potter fan fiction obsession;

There is constant positive reinforcement while still pushing Ellie to develop better skills;

If Ellie doesn’t have an assignment to work with, Sebastian has a variety of activities that he uses to target the areas that Ellie needs help with;

What a difference a year can make! Just 12 months ago, Year 12 student Harriet was at a crossroads with her schooling. She had just received the results of her Year 11 final exams, and they were a fair way off where she was hoping they’d be, particularly her Maths Methods. Harriett had scored 54% and she was being encouraged by her teacher to consider switching down to Maths General for her final year. Harriett knew within herself that she was capable of doing the Methods course, all she needed was the right support and guidance. That’s when Harriett and her family reached out to A Team Tuition for help.

Like many students new to tutoring, Harriett was at first a little apprehensive, and wasn’t quite sure what to expect. She was worried that it would just be like having an extra class outside of school time, and that it would “feel like a chore”. When Harriet began working with Tiahna, one of A Team’s Gold Coast-based Academic Personal Trainers, however, she was pleasantly surprised to find the experience was the opposite of what she expected.

“Working with Tiahna has been great,” says Harriet. “I am able to get a lot of work done during our sessions together, without it feeling intense or stressful. It’s also really reassuring to know that I am going to get through my work, especially having Tiahna there to help explain things that I don’t get in a way that I can easily understand.”

Not only has working with Tiahna provided Harriett with structure and consistency regarding her studies, it has also given her the confidence to back her abilities and achieve what she knew deep down she was capable of.

“I could tell straight away that Harriett was a bright student,” explains Tiahna. “Her biggest struggle was that she was second guessing herself when answering questions in exams, which I think stemmed from a combination of not completing enough practice questions, and her confidence in her own ability.”

Drawing on her observations and her own experience, Tiahna and Harriett worked together to create a plan that was specifically designed to address Harriett’s particular problem areas, including working through an extensive set of practice exam questions, and even working ahead of the content in class!

Ultimately, Harriett’s work with Tiahna has allowed her to recapture her confidence and get back on the front foot with her Maths. After only just passing at the end of Year 11, Harriett is now scoring 95% in Maths Methods, a truly dramatic transformation! As she prepares to face her final exams in a few months time, Harriett’s revitalised approach to her Maths has her primed to achieve what she is truly capable of.

From youth through to adulthood, life is full of challenges. For young kids, the social and academic pressures associated with high school can unfortunately detract from what could – and should – be some of the best years of their lives. Regrettably, anxieties regarding academic performance can lead to disengagement from school work and peers, and has the potential to lead to more severe mental health issues. One of the key contributors to success, however you define it, is the presence of a strong support network. The story of Year 10 student Grace and her journey with Academic Personal Trainer, Blake, is a testament to the holistic role tutoring can provide for young students.

Working hard has never been Grace’s problem, On the contrary, she felt like she had been working harder than she ever had before. Unfortunately, Grace wasn’t seeing this effort reflected in her grades. She’d try and try and try, but her results seemed to be stuck at Cs, and this began to cause Grace some anxiety, as she felt like there was nothing she could do to improve.

Wanting something to change, Grace and her family got in touch with A Team Tuition for help, and eventually she started working with Blake. Grace admits that at first she was “super anxious” about having a tutor.

“In the beginning, I really struggled to stay engaged and comprehend what Blake was trying to teach me,” recalls Grace. “I was super anxious.”

Blake could also sense Grace’s concerns, noting that initially she was really stressed about every single piece of work she had, and he could see how a lack of confidence in her ability was really affecting her.

Over the course of their time together, Blake shared with Grace that the secret to success for her was to work smarter, not harder; putting in hours and hours of work was just draining energy and adding stress if it wasn’t focused on the curriculum, and aimed at what her assignments actually involved. Blake showed Grace how to refocus her efforts in a more concise and productive way, which has ultimately allowed her to reduce her workload, and ease her stress. He has also been able to explain some of the trickier concepts to Grace in a way that she can easily understand.

“I used to work a lot more hours trying to achieve higher grades, but I never got the results I wanted,” says Grace. “I actually work a lot less hours now than I used to… and I’m a straight A student! The best part about working with Blake is he is able to explain things in multiple different ways which helps me understand the topics more comprehensively. He has helped me feel less stressed about learning and studying, and I feel way less anxious about assignments now too.”

After just one term working with Blake, Grace went from a ‘C’ to an A in English and after one year, Grace is now a straight A student!

Grace’s parents Kerrie and Russell are immensely happy with their daughter’s improved grades. More important, however, has been the reduction they have observed in her anxiety:

“The goal was never a straight A student; this has just been a happy byproduct,” explain Kerri and Russell. “Grace’s partnership with Blake has helped take the anxiety and stress away from her studies, and improved her mental health.”

Ultimately, success of any kind should never be at the detriment of an individual’s growth and happiness. Of course, grades are important, but never more so than the mental health of a student. Grace and Blake’s story is a fine example of how the support of an Academic Personal Trainer is a purpose-built stone capable of attending to both of these birds.

The senior years of high school, Years 11 and 12, can certainly be an overwhelming time for students. Carefree lunchtimes on the handball courts become distant memories as the emphasis on grades and future careers sharpens. Life becomes a balancing act, with sacrifices a natural consequence. As students around the country feel the pinch of a new wave of exams and assessments, and with many also reverting back to online learning, the story of Paige’s success is a testament to an often-overlooked facet of tutoring: mentorship.

When Paige first embarked on her journey with A Team, she was receiving Ds across the board at school. She was a bright student, but she struggled with her confidence in the classroom and with applying her knowledge, and ultimately wasn’t reaching her true potential. Paige knew that some tutoring might be helpful, but she was a little anxious about not getting along with her tutor, and how it might affect her time to socialise.

“I was kind of turned off of tutoring at the very beginning,” explains Paige. “I was worried that I wouldn’t get along with my tutor, and I was also worried that it would affect my social life, as I felt like most of my friends would all be going out and having fun while I would be going tutoring.”

By gaining an intimate understanding of her personality, needs and interests, however A Team was able to assuage Paige’s concerns by setting her up with an Academic Personal Trainer who shared much in common. Paige and her APT, Gold Coast-based Jane Andrews, struck up a wonderful connection from the outset, and very quickly established a mentorship that has helped transform Paige’s approach to her schooling, and keep her fresh and engaged as she approaches her final year.

“Jane and I have developed a great connection,” says Paige. “It has become a lot of fun, especially how we are just able to laugh over random things to do with school or life in general. It has also been really helpful when I have tough weeks at school. I feel like I can chat about things with Jane and she helps to give me some perspective, especially because she’s been through it all herself.”

The positive relationship that Paige and Jane have developed has been pivotal to improving Paige’s performance in the classroom. Building on the strategies that Jane shared with her, Paige has been able to apply her knowledge in more specific and sophisticated ways, particularly in English, and has turned her Ds into Bs as a result! As a result of her improved grades, Jane has seen a dramatic change in Paige’s mindset and confidence.

“Paige is a very smart young lady who has very insightful ideas,” notes Jane. “Her problem, however, certainly in writing-heavy subjects like English and History, was that she wasn’t supporting her ideas with evidence or expressing them with enough clarity. Over the course of the year we have been working together, Paige has displayed wonderful tenacity and determination to improve. She has been very receptive to the strategies I have shared with her, particularly with seeking help and feedback from her teachers, when previously she was very shy to do so. Her increased confidence has been a thrill to see, and will hold her in great stead for next year!”

It’s no secret that confidence is often the key to success, and Paige’s rejuvenated self-belief has her primed for a wonderful final year in 2022. Regardless, at a time in her life when things can quickly become very overwhelming, her time working with Jane has given Paige the gift of laughter, perspective, and most importantly, mentorship.

“Overwhelm paralysis” – ever heard of it? Maybe, maybe not? You’ve almost certainly experienced it at some point in your life, though. That feeling of having so much to do and not even knowing where to begin, and ending up completely frozen, and procrastinating, procrastinating, finding something else, anything else at all to do… It’s a terrible sensation which can very quickly snowball into other feelings of stress and anxiety, and one that Year 8 student Emily unfortunately knew all too well.

When first starting with A Team with her tutor and the Somerville school program, she was consistently achieving D grades in the majority of her subjects. She had the very common habit, however, of leaving study and assignments until the absolute last minute. She would feel overwhelmed by the apparent enormity of work required by certain tasks, and had a tendency to shut down and put off even starting assignments, particularly if she found them initially confusing or difficult. In Emily’s case, her overwhelm paralysis was inhibiting her capacity to work to her potential. That’s when her family decided to get her some support. Cue A Team Tuition!

Holly, one of our Academic Personal Trainers, started working with Emily at the middle of 2020, and has been supporting her with her English, Science and Humanities for just over one year now through private and school sessions. While Emily admitted that initially she was apprehensive, she was pleasantly surprised at how pleasant the experience was, and how comfortable it has been. By the end of the school year, after working just six months with Holly, Emily began to achieve B’s in the majority of her subjects. Now, Emily has spent the last two terms honing in on her time management skills and assessment strategies which have helped her achieve A’s!

“At first I was concerned that tutoring was just going to be like another class at school, with someone just telling me what to do,” says Emily. “But as soon as we started together, I realised that Holly really understood me and what I was experiencing, and she has helped me develop new strategies to use with my work.”

Emily now has a whole arsenal of study strategies at her disposal, which allows her to mix up her exam preparation, and test her knowledge in different and creative ways. This has allowed her to approach her studies with a newfound confidence, which has spilled over into the classroom too, where she is no longer afraid to ask questions when she doesn’t understand something.

After just one year, Emily’s revitalised approach to her learning has allowed her to realise her potential, and transformed her D grades into As! More importantly too, she has rediscovered her passion for learning, setting her up to really get the best out of her high schooling years.

Navigating change can be difficult for anyone, regardless of age or life experience. For teenagers who are still working out who they are as people, change of any kind can be particularly difficult. Year 10 student James witnessed this first hand at the beginning of this year when he moved to a new school. It was a big life change for James, and unfortunately in the process of adjusting, his rhythm and routine were adversely affected; his focus was a bit all over the shop, and naturally, his grades started to suffer as a result.

Seeing his grades hit an all-time low, James’ parents reached out to A Team Tuition for help. They met with one of our Academic Specialists, who worked with them on unpacking and understanding James’s particular needs and challenges when it came to his learning. Our consultant also gauged who James was as an individual, his interests and his personality, and then matched him with an Academic Personal Trainer accordingly.

James’ Transformation Using Academic Personal Training

Cue Hannah, one of A Team Tuition’s Brisbane-based APTs, who began working with James online mid-way through Term 1, 2021. Initially, James admits he was apprehensive and nervous about working with an APT:

“I was nervous because I had just moved to a new school so a lot was changing in my life,” explains James. “I saw working with Hannah just another change to add to the list, and so I wasn’t happy about it at first.”

Rather than becoming “just another change”, however, James’s sessions with Hannah actually became a pillar from which to build his new routine. The time they spent each week allowed him to form a new groove, and has helped him become adjusted to his new life.

Additionally, Hannah’s ability to connect with James and understand his unique learning style has helped him radically transform his Maths grades in the space of just 5 weeks!

“From the outset, I sensed that James’s previous struggles with Maths seemed to stem from the fact that he wasn’t taking into account his visual learning style,” says Hannah. “Together, we came up with the idea of putting together a Maths visual diary for James to put in drawings, diagrams and examples. The idea was that these visual aids would explain the concepts he was learning in class in a way that was easier for him to understand. James really committed to using his visual diary, and I saw an improvement in his confidence almost instantly.”

As is often the case, James’s newfound belief in his ability led to a total transformation in his approach to his learning. Armed with a ‘can-do’ attitude, Hannah notes how James really applied himself over the back half of the term, displaying incredible effort and commitment to improving. As a result, James has witnessed a dramatic improvement in his Maths grades, bringing his initial mark of 20% up to a staggering 80%.

James is a true example of how a little bit of guidance and support can go a long way. He is now well positioned to achieve an A grade!

One Little Girl’s Journey

One beautiful little soul (for the interests of privacy, let’s call her Abbie) missed out on a preschool/PreK/kindergarten placement for a number of personal reasons, not the least of which was due to the incredible upheaval that last year wrought on so many of us.

This year, she went straight into Foundation without having participated in the pre-programs. She had little in the way of literacy, her writing and reading had been explored in as much depth as her mum could muster, and she missed out on a lot of the routine learning that takes place in that first year of formal schooling.

Every day at school was a nightmare. She’d come home in tears, feeling that she was ‘stupid’ and ‘too dumb’ for school. She was lost in a sea of little faces who all knew more than she did, and she lost all confidence when it came to her learning. You can only imagine the guilt and misery her parents felt as well. They helped as much as they could, but not being teachers themselves, they were stumped as to how to help her.

She’s not alone. There’s just no way. This is a story that echoes throughout households around the country. But what did her family do to claw their way out of this educational hole?

Professional One-on-One Tutoring

Moving from being confused in a large group at school to STILL being confused in a smaller group at a tuition centre is not the answer. You need tailored support. In this scenario, both mum and daughter did a ‘crash course’ which saw her confidence and ability improve quickly, as well as mum now feeling better and more positioned to help from her end.

They took control over the curriculum. They got their power back. They shifted to a growth mindset instead of a closed, negative one.
The story begins when Naia’s Mum, Sharon, was researching the best fit for High School for Naia. The school had to have great access to both Tennis and Academics, as she really believed in his ability to succeed not just in sport, but school as well. The A Team Tuition website caught her eye and after reading the story of Hayden McEvoy and seeing the similarity to Naia’s early years – there was no turning back. The tennis program and school had been found at Palm Beach Currumbin State High School, and now the tutoring company as well. Although Naia was accepted into Geelong’s most prestigious school, there was no turning back.

So the journey began – Naia and Sharon packed their bags and made the move from Victoria to Queensland. Naia’s grades were essentially six months to a year behind prior to beginning school at PBC and once starting, Naia struggled to gain grades higher than a C. The school was very supportive in offering Naia a fantastic maths program, yet Naia was not totally engaged and lacked confidence – despite verging on Mensa level with his IQ.

Then along came Blake, one of A Team’s Gold Coast Academic Personal Trainers. Blake quickly noticed how much Naia’s grades were impacting his approach to school and turned around Naia’s confidence so much that Naia now wants to go to University and enter the Academic Excellence program at school.

“When I first started with Naia, he very much had a ‘what’s the point’, ‘why should I bother’ type attitude. He was struggling academically, and I think he had really typecast himself as someone destined to fail.”

Unfortunately this kind of attitude is all-too-common in children struggling with dyslexia, particularly because their learning needs and learning styles are often at odds with those catered for by the traditional classroom model.

Blake’s approach was simple. He knew that Naia’s grades were not a true reflection of his ability, but that Naia just needed someone to help explain the content in a way he understood, and more importantly, someone to believe in him.

“His parents had been really supportive of Naia,” says Blake, “but I think the biggest thing for him was having someone else, someone outside the family, actually believe in his ability.”

With additional support in place, Naia had a genuine belief in his ability, and the conviction that hard work would pay off; his whole approach to school had altered. He went from strength to strength, and by the middle of Year 8 had achieved a mix of As and Bs, including an A in English – a simply staggering result for a young man with dyslexia!

Sharon has of course been immensely pleased with Naia’s results, but for her that’s only one part of the story. Blake’s influence on her son extends not only to his grades, but more broadly to his attitude towards his future. Fuelled by his new-found belief in his ability, for the first time Naia has expressed a desire to go to university. Blake helped Naia instil a work ethic and used goal setting to set not just academic goals, but in Tennis as well. Since then, Naia has won multiple trophies in Tennis and now has Australian Ranking Points. “Blake completely transformed Naia’s mindset. He has influenced Naia to want to be academic, to want to go to university and chase his future.”

Naia now has the luxury of considering many options for his later life after school. A superstar tennis player who has won numerous regional titles, his first dream is to make it onto the professional tour. Naia has felt extremely supported by Blake, Hayden and his school. He is now studying a year level above as he is up for the extra work at home! After his career has finished, he has his eyes set on studying sports science or physiotherapy. In any case, the world is once again Naia’s oyster.

It’s no secret that we tend to like the things we’re good at, and dislike those we’re not. So what happens when we’re forced to tackle those things we struggle with on a daily basis? Well, for Year 11 student Afiyah, her challenges in Maths had an adverse effect on her whole schooling experience.

It was with Maths that Afiyah was having the most trouble. She finished Term One of Year 11 with a D in the subject, prompting her mother to seek out some extra help as Afiyah entered her senior years.

Afiyah’s Transformation Using Academic Personal Training

Afiyah was paired up with Shreya, one of A Team’s Brisbane-based APTs, and the two have been working together since the beginning of the year. In that time, Afiyah has turned her Maths grades around. She finished Year 11 strongly with a B in the subject, and is now on track to achieve tremendous success in her final year of high school.

Shreya is very proud of Afiyah’s improvement, but admits that things got off to a slow start.

Why Academic Personal Training Is About More Than Just Her Marks

For Afiyah, not only has she loved seeing improvement in her Maths grades, but her partnership with Shreya has boosted her confidence – and her results – across the board.

While being delighted with Afiyah’s improvement at school, her mother has also enjoyed seeing her newfound confidence extend beyond the school environment. “Afiyah has become more confident not only with her work, but also in working with other people, and she feels more comfortable in social situations” she says.

As she enters her final year, then, Afiyah is not only well placed to excel in her ATAR, but to enter adulthood full of confidence that she can achieve anything.

Failure, on the other hand, is like Milo – low-GI, releasing its burn slowly. It knocks the wind right out of your sails, and its effects are often long-lasting.

Sam, a young man from Brisbane, is entering his final year of school next term full of confidence. But it very well could have been a different story. Sam failed Year 10 Maths last year, and that one result had a profound effect on his performance across the board in the early stages of Year 11, as his mother Renee explains:

Not only did he start to become tense in exams, but Sam’s loss of confidence also unravelled the study habits he had established in his first four years of high school.

Sam’s Transformation Using Academic Personal Training

Renee knew something needed to be done to restore her son’s confidence, particularly in the lead-up to his final years of high school. So on the recommendation of a friend, she got in touch with A Team Tuition about setting Sam up with an Academic Personal Trainer.

Lachlan, a Brisbane-based APT, has been working with Sam since the start of 2020. In three terms, he has helped transform Sam from a failing Maths student to an A student, with a successful year 12 now firmly within reach! Lachlan credits their closeness in age as the key reason he was able to help Sam achieve this remarkable turnaround:

Additionally, the ability for Lachlan and Sam to work through example questions together in their own time, pressure-free, greatly assisted Sam’s learning.

Why Academic Personal Training Is About More Than Just Marks

While the improvement in Sam’s grades has delighted student and tutor alike, Lachlan, his academic personal trainer, has also been proud of the change in Sam’s confidence.

While Lachlan has been thrilled with Sam’s progress in Maths, he has also seen how this newfound confidence has been beneficial for his schooling in general, noting that Sam has re-implemented a consistent and efficient study schedule.

Renee agrees,

“On the back of working with A Team Tuition, Sam has rediscovered his mojo, and has set himself up to be rewarded for his hard work in his final year of high school.”
