Often, by selecting the VCE subjects that you find most interesting and engaging, you are indirectly selecting the easiest VCE subjects for you. By finding enjoyment in the content you’re learning, you are more likely to feel motivated to study and overall understand the content you’re learning to a higher degree, making the process of graduating VCE easier.  

What Are the Easiest VCE Subjects?

The degree to which you find a subject easy is quite subjective. Factors such as previous knowledge, enjoyment, and motivation all play a part in determining which subjects are best suited to you. 

Math Methods 

Math Methods is believed to be the middle ground of VCE Mathematics, it is easier than Specialist but harder than Further Mathematics. The content taught in methods includes learning to manipulate complicated algebraic expressions, understand principles of statistics, and use mathematics to solve real-life problems (1). The content is quite simple, with Unit 3 and 4 being a repeat of Units 1 and 2. It is therefore easier to get good at maths methods due to studying similar concepts over two years.

English 

Mainstream English is thought to be the easiest English option provided by VCAA. With students learning how to dissect texts for themes from quite early on in their schooling journey, most consider it quite easy to get an A in English. English helps to develop your ability to create and analyse texts, moving from interpretation to reflection and critical analysis (2). The assessment tasks include comparative essays, article analysis, creative writing, persuasive text, and an oral presentation (2). 

Health and Human Development 

Health is considered an easier VCE subject due to the content taught. The study design outlines concepts such as dimensions of health, Australian Healthcare Systems, Government health incentives (3), and any other health related concepts that you come across in your daily life. The subject is easier than most as it is often covers knowledge that you would already have a foundation understanding of. The content is relevant and useful in understanding how Australian and global health systems function (3). 

What Are the Hardest VCE Subjects?

The following subjects may be instinctively hard for some students but quite enjoyable for others. Again, if you find these VCE subjects interesting engaging, and suited to your strengths, they may be the easiest VCE subjects for you.

Legal Studies 

It is considered harder to excel in legal studies due to the abundant amount of weekly reading, writing, and intense memorisation of concepts (4). Unit 1/2 is the first exposure most students get to legal studies with the Victorian curriculum not particularly offering much prior learning of the subject from year 7 to 10. Lots of the concepts are therefore new and required to be learnt at a faster pace than most other VCE subjects.  

Physics 

Getting an A in physics is deemed quite difficult due to the multiple formulas and calculations involved in the subject. Physics is a combination of science and mathematics with a large syllabus containing laws, hand rules, vector quantities, and scalar quantities (5). Remembering and applying these equations to exam questions can be quite overwhelming without dedicated focus and study time. 

Literature 

Literature requires students to look beyond the words of the text and further explore the meaning behind the text (6). The texts looked at in literature are often less modernised and more complex than mainstream English. The focus of literature essays is to explore why the author is writing the way they are and message they are trying to convey about their time (6). Students who are unable to think laterally may find it complicated to grasp an in depth meaning of the texts explored in literature.  

How many VCE Subjects Can You Do?

To meet VCE requirements, you must complete a minimum of 16 units of VCE content. This equivalates to 4 subjects from Units 1-4 with at least 1 being English (7). 

Upon completing 4 primary VCE subjects, students (with school permission and guidance) can select to complete up to 2 additional incremental subjects. Completing these extra 2 subjects can put you at an advantage of achieving a higher ATAR, with 10% of the score from the incremental subject attributing towards your final ATAR (7). 

Tips for Choosing the Best VCE Subjects For You

Before making your final decision, it is recommended that you read through the study designs of each subject to grasp a better understanding of the content and assessment expectations. 

It is also useful to ask advice from a guidance counsellor, teacher, or parent. Remember to keep in mind the course that you desire to study after graduating as subjects may act as pre-requisites for course entry.

The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) recognise that some content taught in subjects may be easier to understand compared to others. VCAA therefore uses a scaling system to rank and average out scores received in all subjects from most to least competitive. This ensures that despite what subject’s students chose to study, all results are appropriately distributed. 

It is therefore not always necessarily smarter to choose the “easier” subjects based on the principle of having a decreased workload. Ensure that you are choosing subjects that you enjoy and find stimulating!

Graduating students need to be prepared for adult life, as the transition to higher education or joining the workforce is one of the most significant phases of life. It is a time when good or bad habits from early life can be broken down and changed – full of opportunity for those who look for them.

At the same time, no one will offer or force you to do things beneficial to you.
You will need to start living life for yourself!

This blog is written and inspired by the personal experiences and observations of myself and a few other university students and graduates. Each of us have had struggles and success in different areas of life after high school, and below are the do’s and don’ts from our personal experiences!

If you have chosen to go down the tertiary education pathway, here is how to prepare for university in Australia!

How to Prepare for University?

Attend Orienation Week 

For those going to university, Orientation Week (commonly called O Week) marks the start of uni life, and it’s important to start strong by having full attendance!

Technically speaking, this week doesn’t include anything imperative to your academic study, but it does help introduce you to a wholesome university lifestyle. Attending O Week will help you become familiar with the campus, its main buildings, food options, and optimal study spots. More importantly, this is when you will meet other people from your course and start to form new friendships.

During O Week, everyone is new and eager to meet new people, so talking to the people sitting around you is a lot less awkward. Also, you’ll be introduced to the various clubs at university, and joining them narrows down the thousands of strangers to a select few who share the same interests as you.

Apart from making friends, there are many other administrative matters a new university student can learn during this week, including organizing a student ID, becoming familiar with transport options, and getting a student mentor. 

In general, O Week at university gets you excited and motivated for your study, and the key to successful university life is maintaining a healthy level of motivation!

Keep Busy and Join Clubs

“The busier you are, the more time you have.”

This quote from one of my seniors is particularly accurate for the procrastinators of this generation.

Keeping yourself busy by participating in sports, activities, and hobbies you enjoy improves your self-confidence, and broadens your horizon in life. It also provides a sense of achievement to increase motivation. 

What’s more, activity outside of the academic curriculum is an amazing way to build your social and professional network.

Career prospects are not the sole reason to keeping your schedule busy. Your hobbies and talents are what define you, and you should certainly explore them as much as possible.

Even if they are not popular or easily accessible, don’t let them go to waste. Whether it be abstract art, chess, or a sport hardly anyone plays, if you try hard enough, you will find others who share your passion.

Remember the Importance of Networking

To the young and inexperienced, networking is considered a bit underhanded or unfair. The reality is, social connections are equivalent to personal judgements of a person’s character, work ethic, and integrity. Accomplishments on paper are well and good, but it can never replace personally witnessing someone’s positive attributes.

Whether you like it or not, the importance of networking is a fact – you must participate in networking if you want to improve employment aspects.

In some courses that may be considered “easier” or have more practical, self-directed learning, I have heard people say they essentially paid for the connections and networking, rather than for actual teaching. That might sound like a bad thing, but it’s quite the opposite!

Networking is important as it significantly boosts your employability, and when it comes to improving your resume, the longer you wait, the less appealing it looks. It doesn’t matter how active you were in high school if you haven’t done much outside of study for the past two years. The earlier you participate in club activity, volunteering, and social gatherings, the easier it is for you to find an internship or entry-level job come graduation year.

Exercise and Productivity – an Unlikely Match

There are many reasons why people exercise, and just as many why others don’t. The one reason you should exercise, for those who hate it, is because it has a major impact on your ability to be productive.

In our childhood and adolescent years, we don’t feel unproductive because we are always full of energy. Later in life, we begin to feel the impact exercise, or lack thereof, has on our body.

Speaking from personal experience, I have never found enjoyment in most sports or physical activity, and thought it was okay, because “I’m a more academic and creative-focused kind of person”.

This mentality caught up to me during the first few years of university when I was constantly fatigued during the day.

I know some friends who were very active in high school, but stopped exercising because of differing dynamics in university sports clubs, time spent on other interests, and so on. Whatever the case, the lack of exercise quickly caught up to them, too.

The connection between exercise and productivity is simple science. Exercise enhances your body and brain’s endurance, which raises your daily energy levels. When you exercise, even if it’s light stretches or warm-ups, your body (and brain) metabolism and blood flow increases for the rest of the day.

Investment in Self & Miscellaneous Activities

What’s most beautiful about this stage of young adult life is that you should be free to pursue what you want to do in life. Investing in yourself means spending time and money on learning and experience personal growth.

The things you do should set you up for your future career, but there should also be plenty of interests you explore simply because you enjoy it. We are humans, not lifeless cogs, only intended to maximise productivity in a great factory.

When it comes to money, having the self-control to save and spend wisely is good, but never do so at the cost of your self-growth. In other words, learn to start saving, but don’t hesitate to invest on your opportunities for learning, upskilling, general world experience, and even just fun experiences!

This is an attitude I’ve only recently realized, because I’ve been brought up to be very mindful of my spending. As a result, I have foregone some great opportunities or overlooked useful resources because of their costs.

If travelling is something you love, go for it! It is one of those things that broadens your perspective significantly, even if it can be very costly.

Remember, you don’t have to get everything right the first time!

Making mistakes and failing is a natural part of life. What’s important is having the self-awareness to reflect on the things you did well and not so well. This also includes being humble enough to accept constructive criticism without taking it personally.

Failing at something is a learning opportunity if you have an attitude of self-improvement. I would encourage you to always look for that way! Never stop working hard, trying your best, and exploring life.

HSIE is a Key Learning Area

Whether your HSC student is on the ATAR pathway or not, HSIE is one of the Key Learning Areas of high school study. Over 70% of NSW students choose HSIE subjects in their final years of high school, studying an average 3-4 units each. 

Units in the HSIE syllabus include:

HSIE syllabus and ATAR weights

ATAR scores are scaled (or weighted) to make scoring fair for all students regardless of subject difficulty. Scaling is adjusted according to the number of students completing each subject across all learning areas. It means that students can focus on the subjects they want to study rather than selecting subjects purely because they are deemed an easier option to gain a high HSC score. 

More students in NSW elect to study HSIE subjects than science subjects. In scaling, the HSIE student is likely to have their HSC score scaled down compared to the science student, even if both students’ HSC results are in the same percentile. 

Should your child study HSIE subjects?

Yes – if they want to. It’s important that your child studies subjects that interest and engage them and that will help them in their tertiary studies and future career path.  

Studying a science subject in the hope of having their ATAR scaled up can be counterproductive. If science is not your child’s strong point or interest, that will likely reflect in their HSC score. Your child will have endured two years of stressful and unenjoyable study for no advantage.

Graduates can work as a veterinarian in both urban or rural settings, conduct research on animal disease and prevention, consult on animal welfare or biosecurity, or teach veterinary medicine at a university. Although there are alternate pathways to becoming a veterinarian, below are the schools that offer Bachelor of Veterinary Science related courses.

Charles Sturt University 

Although this university does not offer any on-campus education degree programs in Canberra, students are able to study a Bachelor of Education (Birth to Five Years) and a Bachelor of Education (Secondary) – Industry Entry degree, online. Both of these courses require three years of full-time studies but no ATAR was noted.  

University of Canberra 

All of the education degree programs at the University of Canberra require an ATAR for teaching of 60 and are 4-year programs.

• With a specialisation on health and physical education, students leave qualified to teach all primary grades with a focus on primary health, personal development and physical education.

• This unique degree allows graduates to become a primary teacher with a focus on the creative arts such as visual arts, drama, music and dance.  

 Bachelor of Early Childhood and Primary Education

There is officially less than one month until the ATAR examination period commences, with the first exam commencing on Tuesday the 12th of October 2021. Now, that may seem like a long time for students to prepare but this time will fly by!

Encourage Them To Stay Organised

Having a physical planner is a great way for students to visualise what needs to be done and in what timeframes. Making sure they have noted all key dates is essential, but also make sure they are adding in activities they love and can look forward to throughout the semester. Productivity apps and software are another great tool to have, particularly if you’re more of a digital planner.   

Find The Right Environment

Finding the right environment to study in is essential – and different for everyone. Some people study best in a quiet, secluded space, while others prefer to be outdoors or amongst others. Note that a study environment doesn’t have to be in one location. It can actually be quite helpful to move around to help break up the day.  

Encourage Having Friends Over

If your child is feeling a little unmotivated or isolated, inviting friends over to form a study group can be very helpful. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses, so this is a great way to learn from one another.  

Utilise Exercise

Exercise is a brilliant way to maintain attention span and keep brain juices flowing. A quick 20 minutes is enough to help refresh and revitalise the body and therefore the brain.

1. Understand the Difference Between Preparing for ATAR vs non-ATAR Classes

Unlike all of your other classes, ATAR classes and external exams require you to remember content from all the way back to Year 11. APT Hannah explains that it is all about attitude when going into studying for ATAR, “you have to realise that you can’t cram like you could in previous years and with non-ATAR classes.” One thing that Hannah encourages her students to do is compile a visual diary “that has prompts diagrams and examples for each week of class so you aren’t forgetting what you did in the first week of class. ATAR covers everything, not just what you’ve done in the past few weeks.” APT Abbey also suggests this and says that “preparing in advance and creating summaries is a must. You’re going to have to know everything from the whole year, which you probably haven’t had to do before. As you learn, write everything down rather than having to do that right before exams” 

2. Study Early & Use School Holidays’

Working consistently through the holidays will allow you to keep your momentum and also recap on things from the precious term. In the words of APT, Tom,  “I felt like it was a real benefit to me that I was able to work during the last two school holidays before exams. I feel like I got a big leg up by using that time that I was given and highly suggest using that to your advantage”

3. Sleep and Take Care of Yourself 

It is a common misconception that to do well at school – really well – you must throw yourself entirely into your schoolwork while leaving your friends, hobbies, and sleep behind.  I won’t deny that getting a 99 ATAR will take a massive commitment of time, energy and determination, but if you focus solely on school you will, quite simply… burn out.  Being able to have breaks from schoolwork is important in keeping you sane and focused! How to get a 99 ATAR is about staying sane through that really tough final year of high school.  APT Hannah says that “You need to make time for things for yourself, whether that is hanging out with your friends, hobbies or relaxing. Even though it may feel like you’re not supposed to be taking a break, it is actually going to help your study more efficiently.” 

Another thing that must stay in your life while preparing for ATAR is sleep. APT Tom explains that “you will be able to notice a difference in the last few weeks of exams between people who prioritised their sleep versus those who did not and had bad study habits.” Having sleep is essential to getting the rest you need to have a clear mind and effective study sessions. 

4. Use Your Friends 

“Even though ATAR is very individualised, you can still work with your peers during the revision stages. Having people to discuss with will help you get through problem-solving and study sessions!”  – APT Tom

It is widely known that the best way to learn a concept is to teach it to someone else! So I guess my calling as a high school tutor started in high school!  Helping your classmates will allow you to discuss, learn, and understand the content for your exams and assignments. There’s no better way to understand different perspectives on a topic than to discuss it with peers.   “Having a community that you can study with in an organised way can be really beneficial, and also sharing ideas about how to study. Even if it is just a group hangout on the weekend to expand your knowledge,” says APT Sam. 

Hannah also explains that it is important to “not compare yourself to your friends – It doesn’t matter how other people are studying, we all learn differently. Everyone has their own strengths while studying, just like you may be good at music, and they may be good at sport. You should learn how to study in your own learning style, even when working with friends.” 

5. Goal Setting 

APT Hannah explains that “sometimes when you’re at school, you miss setting the small, goals. Your goal is always big, such as getting a 99 ATAR or getting into uni. But really, you need to be setting small goals to get there, such as studying for at least 10 minutes every single night, or attending every single class. Abbey also makes a great point that you “shouldn’t set a number for yourself, just that you want to do your very best. Setting a number can limit yourself, because you may be able to achieve even higher than that number!” 

Another important factor to consider when setting your goals is considering who you are setting them for. Sam explains that “it is important to focus on your reasons. You should be working hard for yourself and for your own reasons, without considering external reasons. Figure out why you want a 99 and use that as motivation.” 

Getting a 99 ATAR or even that elusive 99.95 ATAR isn’t impossible.  It’s a process that involves a lot of passion for learning and commitment to constant improvement. As long as you are willing to put in the effort and hard work, you can get the results you want!  Always ask for help and don’t be afraid to seek out a tutor who understands not only the ATAR system but also where you, personally, can overcome any barriers to getting that top entry score.

While New South Wales does offer a few single degree law courses, most of them are 5-year, dual degree courses.  

Australian Catholic University  

ACU offers a 4-year stand-alone Bachelor of Laws degree requiring a minimum ATAR of 73. It also offers the following 5-year dual degree courses:

Macquarie University  

The ATAR for Law at Macquarie really jumps up compared with the previously mentioned schools. Students will have to be at the top of their game if they hope to gain admittance into the following law degree programs at this school:

What is the minimum ATAR for paramedicine in Tasmania?

The University of Tasmania’s Bachelor of Paramedic Practice is the only degree in the state for this area of study. Can you study paramedicine without an ATAR?

Many schools do offer students special considerations and alternate pathways for entry even if they don’t have the required minimum ATAR for paramedicine. Some schools offer exceptions for students who have faced circumstances beyond their control (such as financial hardship, serious medical conditions, etc.) or they may offer bridging courses, credit for on-the-job experience, or international qualifications. Regardless of the entry path students take, most universities will require students to have a police and working with children check, up to date immunisations, and first aid and/or CPR certification. After the crazy year that was 2020, Year 12s across the country woke in December to ATAR scores that were lower than what they might have expected in 2019. The offers they received from universities were also different, with more students with lower ATARs being accepted, and an increase in the number of students deferring their place. How this changes the way students approach the ATAR system or how tutors can help students to approach it is something we’ll have to learn together. One thing is for sure, 2020 can definitely be a valuable learning experience for ATAR 2021, and A Team Tuition is here to help.  

What do the numbers tell us?

After an extremely disruptive school year, Year 12 school leavers finished 2020 with ATAR scores and university offers that were a little different to previous years. 167,438 applicants accepted an offer from a university in 2020, which is a decrease of 3.9 % when compared to the previous year. Of the applications who received offers in 2020, 18,691 applications, or 11.2%, deferred their offer, which is higher than the deferral rate of 10.2% in 2019. It seems students were less likely to want to spend the next year back at school – is this something we could attribute to the severe disruption COVID had on the school year, or is it just teething issues with ATAR in states like Queensland? Do we need to re-think the way we approach the ATAR system, or could we look at how the past year has developed our children’s resilience and the way they adapt to change? 

According to the Undergraduate Applications, Offers, and Acceptances document written by the Department of Education, students’ areas of interest changed in 2020 as well. The most popular broad field of education in 2020 based on the number of applicants was health; there were 74,780 applicants or 26% of the total applicants nationwide. Given the state of the world and the global pandemic, an increased interest in this subject was almost a given. The Federal Government’s new stance on commonwealth support for the health and other STEM-related fields of study might have also had an impact. The next most popular field was society and culture, with 69,039 applicants or 24% of the total number of applicants.  

The average ATAR score for students who received an offer decreased from 77.4 to 77 in 2020. There are any number of reasons as to why this could be the case – COVID and the huge disruption to learning might have something to do with it. 2020 also saw a change in the offers being made to applicants. 27% of all offers made in 2020 to applicants were for those with an ATAR of 70.5 or above, which was lower than previous years. Offers to applicants who achieved an ATAR above 90 accounted for 9.8% of all offers.   

At the height of COVID, several universities, including Australian National University, released posts on their websites displaying a desire to ignore the results of Year 12 students in 2020 and use their results from the previous year instead. Swinburne University went as far as offering an ‘ATAR-free’ alternative pathway to a number of their most popular courses, including their Bachelor of Health Sciences and Bachelor of Business. Will other universities offer this option in the future? We’ll have to wait and see.

The Course of Study

You will be required to undertake five years of a degree in dentistry that has been approved by the General Dental Council. This is then followed by a number of years of postgraduate dental training. You’ll be asked to undertake the University Clinical Aptitude Test (BioMedical Admissions Test) prior to beginning your course of study. You will, obviously, need to meet the ATAR requirements prior to commencement. All in all, you are looking at a significant commitment of time, and the expectations of this degree are incredibly high. This is a popular, competitive area of study that demands a lot of its students.  

The ATAR requirement for the University of Adelaide’s dentistry course is 90 or above. This means that you have to outrank 90% of your peers at the bare minimum. If you have studied the International Baccalaureate, you will need to have scored 33 or above. This is not as high as in other states where the competition is more fierce but still high enough to require dedicated study in year 11 and 12. Where Can I Study?

The University of Adelaide is the preferred option when it comes to the study of dentistry and dental science. It is not offered at the University of South Australia. With a smaller number of course places available, the high ATAR requirement makes sense.   

University of Adelaide

The University of Adelaide has a long history of offering students a world class education on a beautiful, prestigious campus. As previously mentioned, the ATAR requirement for study here is 90+.  

The Bachelor of Dental Surgery offers full time study at the North Terrace Campus. Here you will find tuition under dedicated, professional and specialist teachers. Practical placements (both regional and local) will be assigned to you via the university. You will begin your clinical experience almost immediately via study in a teaching hospital – the Adelaide Health and Medical Sciences building. You will be invited to explore the complete range of dental therapies as you use equipment in a Dental Simulation Clinic.  

You could also differentiate your study pathway and commit to the Bachelor of Oral Health at the same institution. This is a three-year course of study.  

ATAR Score Calculation

ATAR scores in South Australia are perfectly aligned with those in other states. It is a tricky combination of SAC results for assessments and examinations and study scores as well as subject scaling. Study scores are out of 50 for each subject – the lofty goal of so many students!
